Rev. Dr. Jonathan C. Brewer, originally from Vincennes, Indiana, was ordained first as a Deacon in the AME Church in 1903, and then Elder in 1905. He came to Garrett Biblical Institute in 1904 and, while in seminary, served at Allen Chapel Church (AME) in Chicago. In 1907, he received a diploma from the Institute and went on to serve a number of AME churches in Minnesota, Iowa, and Kentucky. In 1922, he was named Presiding Elder in both Kentucky and Illinois districts. He then served as pastor to churches throughout Illinois, Nebraska, Kansas, and Wisconsin for a number of years, until he was again named Presiding Elder over the West Chicago AME District in 1944.
